Honors Mentorship Annotated Bibliography November 10, 2013 In the article titled “Professional Values, Self- Esteem , And Ethical Confidence Of Baccalaureate Nursing Students “ , gives the reader good insight about how certain values and the way we react to certain medical situations can help nursing students acquire confidence . The article begins by stating that many problems dealing with ethics come from today’s health care places increasing greatly caused by the increase of changes in technology and the arising conflicts linking personal, organizational and professional values in the work place. Personal values are the values that you as a person grew up with and have , while professional values leads more towards the values that are implied ( required ) in your workplace. The self-esteem of a nurse ( in this case ) plays a very important role in way the nurse presents his or herself , their identity and it is a factor that adds to their feels of value as a professional. “ … Nurse educators are faced with the challenge of facilitating professional identity development as well as ensuring the well-being of both student and patient during the process of conflict resolution” pg. 480, this statement helps emphasis the importance of ones self-esteem. If you do not have a good sense Many of the interviewed nursing students have stated that they have experienced conflicts between moral and physical distress , culture, and ethical problems. According to this article if the nursing students can improve the way they react towards a certain situation , they can then progress better in their reactions towards those situations. The following quote : “ … nurse educators are faced with the challenge of facilitating professional identity development as well as ensuring the well-being of both student and patient during the process of conflict resolution” ( pg. 480) suggest that even the top nurse educators also face challenging problems regarding conflicts between professional values and self-esteem. This article contains many tables that are backed up with facts in the paragraphs to validate the information provided in the tables. The writer , Mary Quinn Griffin , also provided a list of sources in the last page so that if the readers have any further questions, they can have look up more information related to this article. I found this article very useful because it helped me understand the important roles that professional values and self-esteem play in the way you perform as a nurse. Many people do not think that values and self-esteem can influence the work you do but in reality it can due to the fact that it helps determine how well you are going to handle and act in a certain situation. The article mentions that “senior nursing students in this study reported both high levels of self-esteem and professional nursing value internalization “ (pg. 486 ), meaning that having high levels of self-esteem and professional values help increase the learning of nursing students. The types of tables that the article provides helped breakdown all the necessary information that the article had to cover. I will use what I have learned in the “Professional Values, Self- Esteem ,And Ethical Confidence Of Baccalaureate Nursing Students “ article whenever I am volunteering , interning and even later on in life when I am fulfilling my career. I will keep in mind how much of an impact my self-esteem and professional values can influence how well of a job I do. |

Honors Mentorship March 3, 2014 Advertising Obesity: Can the U.S. Follow the Lead of the UK in Limiting Television Marketing of Unhealthy Foods to Children? The Fat Economy is what most economists call the problem of obese people in the United States. Many health officials state that obesity has become the number one killer , but on the other hand economists are considering the role the economy plays in this and what business derive from it . It basically has economists saying that due to the changes in technology and ways of working plus the role women play in society now, has really help industries come up with ways to make high calorie food cost less for people who have little time to cook any meals. Also technology has contributed a lot to this problem because elevators are now at hand on every floor which makes less people use the stairs. Their work place has also changed from working outside to working indoors and sitting around all day. This article “Advertising Obesity “states that childhood obesity has increased almost three times since the 1970’s and with the help of technology, TV advertisements of unhealthily foods have been more affective towards the young population of children. Both the United States and the United Kingdom are truly considered with the weight of children. In the past three decades the rate of childhood obesity in the United States has more than tripled ! The United Kingdom is not far behind either , Between 1995 to about 2004 , the rate of childhood obesity in the United Kingdom rose from 10% to 16% in boys and from 10% to 11% in girls. The United States is very considered about the obesity rates since the ‘childhood obesity rates and a rise in health problems such as diabetes have tripled the U.S. must act to curb the perpetuation of this critical epidemic. ‘. Advertisement is huge when it comes to any fast food because through their advertisement is where they are able to get known. With that said ‘72% of food product ads within the children’s television advertising category pertaining to the sale of cereals, snacks, candy, and fast food.’ The UK reacted fast and established a ban that eliminated advertising of such unhealthy foods during children television programs. This article shows that we have been fighting against obesity for quite a long time and even in the late 1970’s the problem was getting big. Obesity has slowly but surely become a “ disease” that has affect a lot more people, especially smaller children. |
